BiographyHyrol (b. 1986, Singapore) holds a First Class Honors Degree in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore in partnership with Goldsmith University, England. He also holds a Diploma in Digital Media Design, specializing in Interactive Media Design from Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore.
He is a multi-disciplinary artist whose prime interest lies in the everyday. In his work, he explores the relationship of objects in spaces and query into the absurd order of labour. His recent works involves the use of abandoned objects as a medium for his mobile sculptures. He was recently awarded the Bronze Prize in the International Design Trend Competition 2015, Korea as well as MENDAKI Excellence Award 2015. He was selected to represent LASALLE at its booth in Art Stage Singapore 2015, while in 2013, he was a recipient of LASALLE College of the Arts Scholarship. *hrolism is a fictitious noun created by the artist to simplify his methodology and philosophy of the art he creates Artist StatementHyrol's approach to contemporary art is diverse. Primarily an image-maker, he utilizes various mediums to effectively communicate his ideas. These mediums may include craft, technology and/ or multimedia. He believes the use of various medium/ materials is essential in communicating the meaning of the artwork as it is the bridge that connects the viewer and the artist.
His body is often used to relate his personal struggles or thoughts. He feels the use of the body can cause an immediate response from the viewer and thus creating a dialogue. The outcome of his works becomes performative in nature. His current exploration entails around abandoned objects and how it is almost identical to the life of human beings. He weaves this notion through the theories of psychogeography, the idea of mobility and the absurd order of labour. |
