Forever, Never
My area of interest lies in the social and cultural issues within Singapore. In my work, I hoard abandoned objects from neighbourhood dumpsites, disassemble them and reassemble various parts together. For this project, I will explore the subjects of authorship, ownership and relationship, where I create familiar visuals by constructing them with conceptual intent. I observe that change is ever constant in Singapore. We hardly see anything that is not under-construction, demolished or refurbished. It seems that we hardly cherish the things that we have built and own, which also gives me the impression that there is no end to this ‘nation building’. In ‘Forever, never.’, I will attempt to reflect this notion through the use of abandoned objects, as I felt that these objects contained life and some form of broken kinship with its previous owner. The construction of a mobile container, on the other hand, contains reassembled objects, as they were brought on a journey of re-abandonment. I felt that this process signifies the monotonous cycle of change. |
